Embracing Change: Lessons from My Own Journey

“Sometimes the change you resist is the very change that will transform your life.”
September is a season of shifts. The air shifts, routines settle back in, and it feels like life is whispering “something new is waiting if you’re willing to step into it.”

Early in my career I thought I knew exactly what the rest of my life would look like. I was perfectly happy at the bedside, caring for elderly patients, doing wound care, helping with daily needs, passing medications, and connecting with families. It was important work I was proud of. I worked at a teaching hospital, which meant students from every healthcare program in the area rotated through.

Now, many of my coworkers rolled their eyes when students showed up. They avoided them or saw them as a burden. Me? I loved it. I didn’t care what school they came from, what course they were in, or how much they knew. Teaching gave me joy.

One day in the break room, a woman approached me and said, “So, I hear you have a master’s degree. Have you ever considered becoming a professor?” Without hesitation, I laughed and replied, “No, I already have a job. I love what I do.”

She just smiled, handed me her card, and told me, “Think on it. The students need you.”
I tossed her card in my snack bag and forgot about it. A few months later, I attended a Women’s Conference called “Embracing Change” and something shifted. Sitting in that room, I realized I didn’t have to cling to one vision of my life. I could evolve. I could expand. I could grow in my definition of “career path.”

That decision to lean into change opened the door to a whole new chapter for me. It taught me that what feels like a detour might actually be your destiny. I ended up stepping into education, a role I had never planned for but one that shaped me in powerful ways. And here’s the wild part: that woman in the break room? She later became the Dean of the program where I would earn tenure just four years later.

If I had clung to the safety of what I knew, I would’ve missed out on that entire chapter of my life.
September reminds us that change doesn’t always arrive with fanfare. Sometimes it comes as a quiet invitation, tucked into your day like a business card slipped into your snack bag.
