“I need you, you need me…You are important to me. I need you to survive.” Hezekiah Walker
September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and a time to bring attention to something many women silently experience: SEVERE mood changes linked to hormonal shifts. Heavy on “severe.” This is not regular PMS. In fact it could be life threating on a woman’s mental health. The impact of the hormonal shift could bring a woman to desire to no longer be here. We speak on the undeniable impact of post-partum depression often but little is said about perimenopause depression which is equally as dangerous. We must protect women at every stage of life.
If you notice intense depression, overwhelming anxiety, unusual irritability, or emotional distress before your cycle, it may be Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), a serious hormonal condition that significantly affects your mental and emotional well-being and impact the way you function before or during the period. We encourage everyone experiencing such symptoms to also seek the professional help of a therapist and psychiatrist for further diagnostics.
PMDD is not a weakness. It is not “just in your head.” It’s also not mental illness. It is a medical condition caused by your brain’s sensitivity to normal hormonal fluctuations. Women with PMDD may experience:
- Severe mood swings
- Depression or feelings of hopelessness
- Anxiety or panic attacks
- Debilitating fatigue and extreme brain fog
- Feeling suicidal or a if “I wish I was no longer here” with out the desire to self-harm
These symptoms can feel overwhelming for sure but you don’t have to live like this. I actually want you to LIVE FREE of PMDD!
Hormonal balance, proper evaluation, and personalized care can help stabilize mood, improve emotional wellness, and restore your sense of control. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
